Telehealth VS Telemedicine Telemedicine is similar to Telehealth. Telehealth refers to a broader scope of remote healthcare service but Telemedicine refers specifically to remote clinical services. Telehealth can also refer to remote non-clinical services. For example provider training and meetings (link 3). In the past the network is not as fast as now, thus telemedicine is only use in clinical services. Now, due to the development of network, more information can be transferred in a shorter period, thus Telemedicine can be to provide other non-clinical services. The word “Telehealth” refers to both clinical and non-clinical services. Advantage and Disadvantage of Telehealth Advantages: With Telehealth, people are able to have consultation with their health care provider at home/office. This is convenience for those patients with physical disability or elderlies. This also makes their family member’s life easier as they do not need to take an off in order to bring the patient to hospital. It is cheaper to have consultation with doctors through Telehealth compare to visit the doctor personally. This would also reduce travel expenses. Telehealth helps to save time as patients do not need to spent time on traveling and waiting for their turn to have consultation. Telemedicine: The Future in Health Care

Topic Question: Is telemedicine vital for health care delivery?

The idea of telemedicine is not new. In fact, when we get sick we often pick up the phone and discuss our conditions and possible treatments with our health care providers through the telephone. When there is an accident we dial 911 to obtain emergency assistance. These are just a few simple examples of applications of telemedicine. With advancements in technology, the new era of telemedicine will allow the patients and doctors to actually communicate both verbally as before but also visually. Telemedicine is broadly defined as “the use of electronic information and …show more content…
Legal, licensure, confidentiality, and cost issues are other potential barriers to the widespread implementation of telemedicine.1
The health care industry must find the funding for telemedicne with its wide range of applications. Just like any other cutting edge technology, telemedicine will be costly to implement in the beginning. The connectivity and the hardware of the system will be expensive, but as the project moves forward these costs will be reduced. Telemedicine will in the future reduce the cost for health care. As for the patients, telemedicine will allow them to have access to the specialist that they once were not able to obtain. People in underprivileged, rural, and geographically isolated region will be able to receive quality health care without delay or the trauma of traveling to a new region. The Development of Telehealth Essay

WAYS TO SPEAK SERVICES
Store-and -forward is a means of transmitting of medical information to other medical professionals and facilities that will provide the recipient relevant medical history, essential signs, medical data, laboratory results and images. “Store-and-forward telemedicine systems have the ability to take and store digital still or moving images of patients, as well as music and words data. A store-and-forward system removes the necessity for the patient and the clinician to be accessible at the same time and place. Store-and-forward is therefore an asynchronous, no interactive form of telemedicine. It is usually applied as a clinical consultation (as opposed to an office or hospital visit)”. (http://www. ahrq. gov) One of the major concerns with store and ahead is whether it’s as effectual as in person medical visits, does it have comparable outcomes, is it appropriate for appropriate medical management, is the patient truly content with the results and level of services and could it be cost effective? There are several great things about store-and-forward technology. Patients in rural areas could be seen by area of expertise physician miles away when there is bound access to the assistance in the area. The store-and-forward of medical information is also being used with emergency response clubs to communicate the information to the emergency room staff for an efficient copy of vitals and medical position. The store and in advance technology is reported to be the least expensive way to communicate and the most appropriate in real time for patients at a distance needing medical appointment. A different type of store and front technology is videoconferencing technology. Telehealth improves organizational productivity:

Employees can avoid absences from work when telehealth services are available on site or when employees can remotely participate in consultations about family members.
These examples illustrate the some improved outcomes and cost savings being achieved by Telehealth and telehealth programs:
Home monitoring of chronic diseases is reducing hospital visits by as much as 50% by keeping patients stable through daily monitoring. The Development of Telehealth Essay
The national average for re-admission to hospitals within 30 days following a heart failure episode is 20%. Telehealth monitoring programs have reduced that level to less than 4%.
Timely provision of treatments that effectively reverse the consequences of a stroke have risen from 15% to 85% due to the availability of telestroke programs.
Telehealth support to Intensive Care Units (often called eICUs) is reducing mortality rates by 15 – 30% and substantially reducing complications and length of stay.

Telehealth retinopathy screening programs support early identification of serious eye disease and reduce the incidence of blindness in diabetic patients.

In 1996, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released its report Telemedicine: A Guide to Assessing Telecommunications for Health Care. In that report, the IOM Committee on Evaluating Clinical Applications of Telemedicine found telemedicine is similar in most respects to other technologies for which better evidence of effectiveness is also being demanded. Telemedicine, however, has some special characteristics-shared with information technologies generally-that warrant particular notice from evaluators and decision makers. The Development of Telehealth Essay

Since that time, attention to telehealth has continued to grow in both the public and private sectors. Peer-reviewed journals and professional societies are devoted to telehealth, the federal government provides grant funding to promote the use of telehealth, and the private technology industry continues to develop new applications for telehealth. However, barriers remain to the use of telehealth modalities, including issues related to reimbursement, licensure, workforce, and costs. Also, some areas of telehealth have developed a stronger evidence base than others. The Development of Telehealth Essay

The Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) sponsored the IOM in holding a workshop in Washington, DC, on August 8-9 2012, to examine how the use of telehealth technology can fit into the U.S. health care system. HRSA asked the IOM to focus on the potential for telehealth to serve geographically isolated individuals and extend the reach of scarce resources while also emphasizing the quality and value in the delivery of health care services. This workshop summary discusses the evolution of telehealth since 1996, including the increasing role of the private sector, policies that have promoted or delayed the use of telehealth, and consumer acceptance of telehealth. The Role of Telehealth in an Evolving Health Care Environment: Workshop Summary discusses the current evidence base for telehealth, including available data and gaps in data; discuss how technological developments, including mobile telehealth, electronic intensive care units, remote monitoring, social networking, and wearable devices, in conjunction with the push for electronic health records, is changing the delivery of health care in rural and urban environments. This report also summarizes actions that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) can undertake to further the use of telehealth to improve health care outcomes while controlling costs in the current health care environment.
