The instrument used was a non-copyrighted, 46-item open-ended questionnaire, Sexist Attitude Inventory (SAI) to measure attitudes of professionals toward the opposite sex, who dominates the profession. Originally, the SAI was used for economics, so the instrument had to be adjusted. They called in Attitude Inventory (AI) to accommodate their study. The instrument was pilot tested, and the item analysis indicated a strong degree of internal consistency, which proved validity, and reliability (McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008). The 4-point Likert scale was used and the scoring 4 being high 1 being low. A high AI score would be equal to or greater than 131 and a low AI would be equal to or less than 120 and is consistent with the original SAI. Today, most people perceive nursing as a women profession. Men who enter this field have been looked at as outcasts. Many individuals feel that a man does not belong in a “feminine? profession. I believe that statement to be untrue and unfair. The issue of gender discrimination in nursing is the same as other professions. The only difference is nursing is dominated by women, and men are the minority fighting for equality.
Gender or sex discrimination involves treating an employee or a class of employees differently because of gender. Whenever this discrimination affects the terms or conditions of employment, it is illegal. Gender-based disparate treatment of employees with regard to pay, title, position, hours worked and vacation time is generally considered illegal and morally wrong. Just 2.7 percent of the working nurse population in the United States are men. To understand why nursing is dominated by women we have to examine the it?s history. Male nurses may belong, but there?s still not many around. According to the U.S. Labor Department statistics, “6.7 percent of registered nurses were male”(statistics). To understand gender discrimination in nursing we must first understand the past. Nursing was found in the 3rd century in ancient Rome and was dominated by men. (Gender) Since the 20th century women have dominated the nursing profession. (Gender) Actually in the 1917 American Nurse Association was founded, and no men where allowed. (Gender) The rule eventually changed in 1930, allowing men the right to be a nurse Classroom prejudice is my first reason of discrimination against male nurses. In an interview I conducted with Derrick Johnson a registered nurse he stated that “In most of “his” classes the curriculum and teaching styles where centered towards women”(Johnson). Johnson goes on to state that ” While [he] was in nursing school he could never recall a time he read some thing in one of his textbooks referring to men as nurses”(Johnson). These examples given by Johnson proves that nursing educators fail to acknowledge the needs of male students. I myself am a sophomore in the College of Nursing at the University of Cincinnati. Are male nurses accepted by female nurses? Nursing was mainly a female career, over the year’s males are moving into the role of nursing (McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008). The shortage of nurses could be a factor why males are entering the nursing field. According to (McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008 in 1963 on 1% of nurses were male and in 2000 5.4% are male. People question a male’s sexuality if they move into the nursing profession. Public’s assume that the male nurses are homosexual as cited by (McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008. Whereas women are accepted in the role of a physician, men are challenged by the role of nursing. A study was done to determine the attitude of acceptances of the male nurses by female nurses (McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008).

A quantitative-descriptive design was used to inquire the level of acceptance of male nurses by practicing female registered nurses in rural and urban areas. The setting was a large Midwestern state with urban and rural areas. This area had evident of the nursing shortage was evident (McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008). The university’s human subjects committee gave the approval for the study. Consents were implied if the participates returned the Personal Date Sheet and completed study tool. A power analysis determined a sample size of 144 licensed registered nurses was needed for an alpha of .05 at the .80 power level, according to McMillan, Morgan & Ament, 2008). Lists of addresses of all registered nurses were obtained. The sample was chosen by counties with 100 or less (rural area) registered nurses and counties with 2000 (urban area) or more registered nurses. Rural and Urban area would be the dependent variables. There are books and movies about how biased people are about male nurses. In the movie, “Meet the Parents”, a male nurse named Gaylord Focker meets this beautiful girl Pam. They fall in love, but when Gaylord and Pam go to visit her parents, everything goes wrong for Gaylord, or Greg, as he would like to be called. Pam’s dad, unlike her mother, does not like Greg at first just because he is a male nurse.

This study will be exploring the reason male nurses are apparently dominant in the leadership role than the female nurses. Leadership is an integrate part in every human organization as an important subject; it has continued to generate an immense amount of research, although the aspect of male nurse dominance in leadership role appears to be unexplored, the prevailing circumstances shows that healthcare organizations prefer the male nurse in administrative roles than the female nurses. Reading textbooks that are constantly referring to nurses as women, can give a men in the classroom a misconception that nursing is not for men.
Another problem male nurses are experiencing in the classroom is discrimination by their peer counterparts. Registered nurse, Joan Whitehead stated that “While she was in pre-nursing class female students humiliated the only male student in the class.
