One of the greatest challenges to health care today is the increasing diversity of our patient population. The demographics of any healthcare setting is simply a reflection of our changing society at large. Today’s population looks very different than it did fifty years ago. Not only has there been a profound transformation in this area there has also been a shift in the responsibilities that a health-care worker has to his/her patients.Foundations of Trans cultural Nursing They must address the needs of the whole patient and provide care that is not only medically competent but culturally competent as well. The social context is a significant factor in how healthcare is delivered. Trans cultural nursing practices have evolved in the latter part of the 20th century and still remain a key part of effective nursing practices. However, understanding is only the beginning. It is only when the key concepts of trans cultural nursing are embedded in the practice of an effective and enlightened health care worker can we say with confidence that we are treating the whole patient. The founder of the trans cultural theory is Madeleine Leininger. Her work covered much of the 20th century and beyond and was the first to define Trans cultural nursing. It was because of her work and perseverance that this area of nursing became a formalized way of improving health care practices.

Mexican Americans are the largest minority group in the United States. Listening to the Hispanic patients helps gain a cultural perspective of health care in the Mexican American population. Through an interview, reading text books, journals, and online research I learned the importance of family, religion, healthcare beliefs, and the lifestyle practices of their culture.Foundations of Trans cultural Nursing Although Hispanics are the largest minority group many of their needs are unmet when healthcare is involved. Many factors contributing to this include but are not limited to: linguistics (inability to speak English), culture (culturally distinctive beliefs), and the lack of insurance. Assessment of the Hispanic Culture The United States has become racially and ethnically diverse in the last decades. The Mexican American population is growing rapidly labeling them as the largest ethnic minority group in the United States. Culture is defined as the learned, shared, transmitted values, beliefs, norms, and life way practices of a particular group that guides thinking, decisions, and actions in patterned ways. Most of what Hispanic people believe, think and do, both consciously and unconsciously, are determined by cultural background.
Understanding and implementing culturally competent and culturally congruent care are the key factors for effective and excellent nursing care (Srivastava, 2007). However, health care provider’s roles and responsibilities in meeting health care needs of the clients in consideration to cultural perspective and diversity are getting more challenging and complicated due to increased number of people from a group of multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society, which, in turn requires health care providers to acknowledge and understand variations of cultural healthcare beliefs, values and practices.

Nurses should understand the different cultures of the society they are caring for and develop awareness of ones own culture and ethnic identity to avoid biases, misunderstanding and prejudices to other culture (Royal College of Nursing, 2009).
