1. Introduction
In 2013, Health Affairs published a conceptual framework designed to unify and guide diverse stakeholders in the emerging field of patient and family engagement [1]. The framework (Fig. 1) was built through the collaboration of clinicians, funders, patients, caregivers, administrators, medical educators, and policymakers committed to bringing patient and family voices not just to direct care decisions but to healthcare organizational design, governance, and public policy and used in various efforts to advance patient and consumer engagement [2], [3]. We believe the conceptual framework provides practical and important insights about how to engage patients and consumers in the use of research evidence. 2. Engagement is a means not an end
In the conceptual framework, patient and family engagement is defined as: Patients, families, their representatives, and health professionals working in active partnership at various levels across the health care system—direct care, organizational design and governance, and policymaking—to improve health and healthcare.

This definition identifies the ultimate object of engagement as the development of a collaborative partnership between patients (including families) and consumers and health professionals. The definition also implies that the end purpose of this relationship is to improve healthcare and health outcomes for both individuals and society. Ultimately, a partnership between patients and health professionals—whether they be clinicians, administrators, support staff, policymakers, or researchers—should lead to improvements ranging from better patient outcomes, improved population health, and effective and efficient use of limited individual and societal resources. Under the framework’s definitional focus on partnership, we better understand that patients or consumers are not able to partner with research findings, but rather with those who fund, conduct, disseminate, or utilize such evidence. From this perspective, research evidence is better viewed as an essential tool for patients, in partnership with health professionals, to improve healthcare and health. Sadly, this perspective of evidence is rarely presented to patients and consumers or encouraged in our current system of care.

7. Conclusion
As the conceptual model of patient engagement suggests, relationships between patients and health professionals should strive for full partnership and shared leadership. Narrowing the separation of technical experts from laypersons through specific strategies is critical to such partnerships growing and flourishing. Sometimes the art of nursing is more of an intuition developed through years of experience on the frontlines of healthcare. Steele describes a situation when, as a hospice nurse, he recognized a patient was going into the active dying phase. “The reason for being able to tell she was actively dying was not something I could teach anyone,” he explains. “But when you see it enough, a nurse develops a skill where they have an unconscious competence.

Steele recalls an instance when his resourcefulness helped someone when medical facilities weren’t near. “A friend who was an hour away from the hospital complained of chest pains,” he recalls. For instance, a nurse in the intensive care unit may be assigned two patients, with one being much sicker than the other. “You need to be able to convey to your patient that their needs are valid and that they are valued, while still putting lots of time and energy into the other, sicker patient and their family,” Restad explains.

Taking all of the scientific concepts and hard nursing skills one learns in school and applying those to real-life scenarios is what the nursing profession is really about. Any person can learn these nursing skills. But to put it all together and add the element of care — that’s nursing,” Restad says.
