All these factors require staff training and development to deliver high quality care to older Australians. Australian population, like other developed countries, is aging as a result of life expectancy, baby boomers after Second World War and declined birth rate. These means in the future will be relatively fewer people of working age to support increasing number of older Australian. In result, requirement for aged care workers will increase in next 40 years. In 2050 number of people between 65 and 85 is expected to be double and number of people 85 years and older is expected to increase four times. In contrast number of age working people is expected to increase by 44 per cent. As a consequence, the proportion of people aged and over in all population will increase from 13 per cent in 2010 to23 per cent. Eventually it is expected that over 3.5 million older Australian will need aged care services which will require aged care workforce to increase by about 500.000 and reach figure 827.000 in 2050. Aged care currently has problem to recruit and retain workers and it expects to be worse in the future when labour market will become smaller as a result of aging population. To meet the increasing demands of the work staff productivity needs to be increased. It could be achieved by ongoing training and education.
